What is EEG and Brain Mapping?

EEG or electroencephalography is the measurement of electrical patterns on the surface of the scalp that reflect cortical activity and are commonly referred to as brain waves.

Meanwhile, brain mapping or quantitative EEG (qEEG) is a digital EEG analysis. It can be said that qEEG is an extension of visual EEG interpretation analysis that can help, even increase understanding of EEG and brain function.

So, brain mapping or qEEG is a procedure that processes EEG activity recorded from multielectrode recordings using a computer.

All neuroimaging can be considered as part of brain mapping. Brain mapping can be understood as a higher form of neuroimaging to produce images of the brain complemented by additional data processing or analysis results (imaging or non-imaging).

Why Do EEG and Brain Mapping?

EEG and brain mapping are usually performed by doctors to evaluate and track changes in brain function. Either due to various interventions, such as neurofeedback or medications.

EEG and brain mapping examinations are safe and completely non-invasive procedures. The procedure is performed using electrodes placed on the scalp to measure and monitor neuronal oscillations (brain waves). The goal is to diagnose dysregulation in brain function and activity.

This examination procedure can be done to assess overall brain health. In addition, it can also measure the impact of addiction on the neural network.

The results of EEG and brain mapping tests can provide a reference for doctors in recommending treatment, or prescribing medication to treat addiction conditions.

When to Do EEG and Brain Mapping?

EEG and brain mapping tests can see changes in brain activity. Usually, these tests are performed by doctors to confirm the diagnosis of disorders related to the brain, such as epilepsy or other seizure disorders.

In addition, EEG and brain mapping are also useful for diagnosing or treating the following disorders:

    • Brain tumor.
    • Damage to the brain due to head injury.
    • Brain dysfunction that can be caused by many things (encephalopathy).
    • Encephalitis.
    • Stroke.
    • Sleep disorders.

So, the right time to do an EEG and brain mapping is when experiencing various brain-related symptoms, as mentioned earlier. Whether or not this examination is necessary will be determined by the doctor.

In addition to diagnosing disease, EEG and brain mapping can also be used to confirm brain death in someone who has been in a coma for a long time.

This ongoing testing method can be used to help find the right level of anesthesia for someone who is in a medically induced coma.

How to Do EEG and Brain Mapping?

Before undergoing an EEG and brain mapping examination, you will be advised not to consume certain foods or drinks, including coffee, tea, chocolate, and soda.

These foods and drinks can affect the stimulation of changes in brain waves which are feared to change the results of the examination. In addition, you should also pay attention to blood sugar levels to keep them under control, so as not to affect brain waves.

After all the preparations, the examination is carried out by attaching a device called an electrode to the scalp so that the electrical activity of the brain can be measured. During the examination, brain activity will be visible on the encephalogram.

At this time, you should remain calm, even the doctor may do it while you are asleep. This is because abnormal brain waves can be seen during sleep.

The EEG and brain mapping procedure usually takes only about 15 minutes. The data obtained from the examination will be converted into a visual brain map report.

The results of the brain map report analysis will identify the problem areas. The report will display the results in a clear and concise format that can be easily understood with the help of medical personnel.

Where Can EEG and Brain Mapping Be Done?

EEG and brain mapping examinations can be done at any hospital that provides equipment for this test. Usually, this examination is done through a recommendation from a doctor after a previous examination.

If you experience any health complaints, you should consult a doctor, so that further examination can be carried out.
