Acclamation Meaning
The word acclamation is the effect and action of the verb to acclaim, which has its etymological origin in the Latin “acclamare”, composed of “ad” = towards, and “clamare” = to shout.
Acclamation refers to many people demonstrating to support someone, which is usually done with applause and shouts. It is a custom practiced since ancient times especially to demonstrate popular support for certain political candidates or their government measures.
Acclamation was used by many peoples, including Greeks and Hebrews, to express their feelings and desires. In ancient Rome, it was a noisy demonstration of acceptance or rejection, as happened, for example, when the people gathered in elections approved or rejected the proposals first of the King and then of the magistrates, with the soldiers clanging their weapons noisily. Military leaders were also acclaimed for their exploits, as happened with Trajan, who was acclaimed seven times. During the crisis of the third century, serious problems arose regarding the succession to the imperial throne, since the army designated the emperors by acclamation, from among its commanders, with several of them coexisting at the same time. They were also deposed with equal ease.
Nowadays, acclamations are collective oral expressions where those present loudly show their support and sympathy for a person. For example: “the singer was acclaimed by his audience.”
In Catholicism, acclamation was known as one of the ways of electing the new Pope, by unanimous applause. This was abolished in 1996 by Pope John Paul II in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, which prohibited the forms of designation by acclamation and by compromise, leaving only the ballot as valid. The last Pope elected by acclamation was Gregory XV (1554-1623).
