Apocalypse Meaning
Apocalypse is a word of Greek origin. It comes from “αποκαλυψις” which can be read as apokaluphis, a term made up of “apo” which indicates separation, the verb “kalyptein” which can be translated as hide, cover or conceal, plus the suffix “sis” which refers to an action. It came to Spanish through the Latin “apocalypsis”. That is why in a literal sense Apocalypse is the action of revealing or discovering.
The Apocalypse is a biblical and prophetic book attributed to Saint John (although the author is only identified as John) that reveals or discovers what will happen at the end of time or the end of the world. It is the last book of the New Testament and the one most loaded with symbology (especially expressed in colors and numbers) and subject to disparate interpretations, so much so that it managed to divide the church fathers regarding whether or not it should be incorporated among the canonical books. , until the end of the second century in the East and until the fourth century in the West when its authenticity was recognized.
It was written at the time of Rome’s first harsh persecutions against Christians, at the end of the 1st century, which would continue until the 4th century, when the Roman Empire was converted to the new faith. The emperor at the time from which this book dates was Domitian (who ruled between 81 and 96), the last of the Flavian dynasty, with a very cruel and ruthless character.
The book deals with the persecution of this emperor and provides advice for Christians to maintain their faith.
It is made up of four parts:
The first part is introductory and contains messages to the churches. The second is loaded with symbolic content: “The Lamb, the Seven Seals and Trumpets.” He takes a stand against Judaism by exposing the Christian liturgy. The third “The Dragon and the Combat” which according to Prévost’s interpretation would refer to the struggles and persecutions of the Romans against the Christians. The last is The New Jerusalem, where a hopeful conclusion is reached about the return of Jesus, who would finally defeat the evil forces.
In a broad and everyday sense, the term Apocalypse is applied to fanciful and fatalistic omens and disastrous thoughts: “Your apocalyptic vision of the world scares me” or “I had an apocalyptic dream where the Earth disappeared and all of us with it.”
In Art, “Apocalypse” designates in the work of the German painter Albrecht Dürer a series of engravings dating from 1498 about the aforementioned biblical book.
