Abyss Meaning
The word abyss comes etymologically from the Latin “abyssimus” and this term in turn from “abyssus”, whose meaning is hell or depth, composed of the negation particle “a” and “byssus”, which can be translated as bottom, alluding to that which is beyond the base or end of something, very deep and essentially dangerous. In turn, the Latin term came from the Greek ἄβυσσος “abyssos” with the same meaning.
These great depths can occur, for example, in the seas and oceans, or in the vacuum to which we are exposed when we are on the edge of a cliff.
Geographically, the deepest point that can be measured in the oceans is called the Challenger Trench, Chasm or Deep, and is located in the Mariana Trench, in the Pacific Ocean. Its depth is eleven kilometers, and its cold is glacial. It is not deserted, but inhabited by microbes.

The Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) tells us about the abyss in the fourth song of his book “The Divine Comedy” entitled “Hell”, which he names as “the abyss of pain” where only moans are heard, being so dark. the place and nebulous that the figures cannot be distinguished there.
Since the abyss is something very large, and gigantic, it is used to refer to extensive gaps or temporal or spatial distances. In Heraldry, a science, and art that studies coats of arms, the abyss is what is located in the center of the shields. The figures or pieces that are placed in this area of the shield are “in the abyss.”
