Acetone Meaning
The etymological origin of the word acetone is found in the Latin word “acētum” which means vinegar. The ending “ona” used in Chemistry, alludes to the fact that it is a derivative.
Acetone is a chemical substance with the formula CH3(CO)CH3, liquid in consistency, colorless, extremely volatile, evaporates quickly, and is flammable. It has a characteristic, strong, and pleasant odor. Among other names, it is also known as propanone. We find it in nature (trees and plants, forest fires, decomposing fats, volcanic gases) and it can be completely mixed with water.
It can be obtained, among other ways, through a method called Weizmann, which is achieved by fermenting starch or by passing isopropanol over copper at a high temperature.
Its most prominent use is as a solvent for paints, nail polishes, and glues. It is used to remove nail polish, and although it is extremely effective, it dries out nails, so it is advisable to buy nail polish removers that do not contain acetone.
Acetone also makes it possible to obtain, as a derivative, plexiglass, a condensation polymer with a wide industrial application. It is used in the manufacture of plastics, medicines, and fibers.
In medicine, when acetone is detected in urine due to a lack of cellular insulin, the cause must be investigated, as it can be dangerous. It can be caused by poor nutrition, diabetes, fever or pregnancy. Exposure to acetone is very harmful to health when it is intense because when it reaches the bloodstream, it is responsible for reaching the entire body, which can cause migraines, allergies, vomiting, and loss of consciousness.
